Games with Good Sword Combat?

I'm a sucker for games with sword fighting. Even so that if it's just a minuscule part of it, I get the game and then often get disappointed lol. Got some good suggestions? Here's games I've already played :

  1. Sekiro
  2. NieR Automata
  3. Metal Gear Rising Revengeance
  4. Cyberpunk 2077
  5. Dragon Age Inquisition
  6. Nioh
  7. Nioh 2
  8. Dying Light
  9. Devil May Cry 1-5
  10. Bayonetta
  11. Dragon Ball XV/XV2
  12. Shadow Dancer
Tbh this would be really long if I continue lol.

  1. Chivalry, Dark Souls/Elden Ring, Monster Hunter, Skyrim, Soulcalibur, Ys, Zelda

Also The Vale: Shadow of the Crown has you swordfighting going only by audio cues if you want a really, really different experience. Not for everyone for sure but I thought it was incredibly cool.

  2. There’s a fantastic duelling game called Hellish Quart. It’s still in early access on Steam, but they seem to be ironing the bugs out. It’s now advertised as a VR game, but it works just as well on a monitor too.

  3. Ghost of Tsushima has some REALLLLLY cool katana fighting mechanics. When you pull it off right, gosh, do you feel cool. If you swipe right on the touchpad, Jin even cleans the blood off his sword with his sleeve before sheathing it again. That game is AMAZING.

  4. I honestly doubt you’ll find a game with *realistic* sword fighting, since it’s very complex and a game can only go this far with combat until it becomes too complex.

However, if you talk about enjoyable combat, I personally would say, play Dark Souls 1-3. The combat in the first two is a tad bit slow at times but feels good. In retrospective, I also have to give FromSoftware a lot of credit for trying very hard to make armors and weapons look and sometimes even feel realistic. They still are very fantasy but many could work in real life, if you tweaked them a bit.

Also, you could ask r/Swords the same question. Might get some interesting answers there.

  5. PvP against humans or ai:
Chivalry 2, Gives you a great ‘battle chaos’ feeling.

For Honor, better for individual showboating. Has lots of unique heroes with a variety of their own moves and styles.

Single Player: Ghost of Tsushima would be my favorite.

Kingdom Come Deliverance is tough to master, but feels great when you get the hang of it.

Witcher 3 is a bit older, and some seem to disagree w me, but I love the sword fighting in it.

Dragons Dogma 2 has pretty fun combat. I haven’t used a sword, but the double ended spear sword thingy is a blast!

Elden Ring and Dark Souls, less flashy and more simple than the rest, but fun and impactful with a good feeling of weight.

Bonus: if lightsabers count as swords, Jedi Fallen Order and Survivor have really fun combat

  6. If you can get past the retro graphics, the Bushido Blade games on PS1 are incredible and the single player mode in 2 is a pretty satisfying experience all on its own, they are more intended for multiplayer though.

  7. if you like the souls series you will love Lies of P. It has a bunch of fun swords, and you can switch the handle and blades of weapons to make your own combination.

It also have some similarity with Sekiro parries and artificial arm abilities.

Its really fun and super polished.

  8. One I haven’t seen mentioned that often in this subreddit is Kingdom Come Deliverance. Granted, I suck because of arthritis but it was a good enough experience.

Hellish Quart is one that I’m personally most excited for. There’s nothing quite like re-living the fencing days of my youth. The game isn’t perfectly accurate, but it’s bloody close enough!

Otherwise, two games that have kinda been forgotten about are: X-Blades and Blades of Time. If you can get past X-Blades “artistic vision” its alright, very much in the hack n’ slash camp. I play a lot of War Thunder which is Gaijin Entertainment’s live service so I found it in their back catalog way back. But at that point, if you’re looking for a hack n’ slash style of game, Dynasty Warriors and it’s spinoffs are just more fun.

  9. There’s like a whole subgenre which might interest you: medieval combat simulators or games with medieval combat simulation elements. These are still gamey, but they’re often less stylized and less cool-looking, while being slower and more methodical, with a greater focus on like simulation and a variety of weapons.

There are a few games of this type. Chivalry and Mordhau have gotten a mention, it seems like. I will add Mount & Blade to this list.

Just be aware of what you’re getting yourself into. All of these games have some really rancid elements to their community, rife with like extreme racism and misogyny. Kinda the usual advice of pick your gamer friends carefully.

  10. You have already played Sekiro. I doubt if something comes close. (I am #1 fan)

Lies of P and Ghost of Tsushima would be my first recommendations (but mentioned in comments)

Middle Earth shadow of War has some solid Sword combat too. Its like Arkham combat with weapons.

Assassin’s Creed 3, Brotherhood and Unity have a decent sword combat. Its quite easy, but can give you the feel.

Dishonored is great if you liked Cyberpunk’s first person ⚔ combat

Trek to yomi is good one too. Its nice, short and simple.

  11. Dynasty Warriors and Samurai warriors are very fun, but not very deep games, should probably look on the last releases first.

One game I can’t recommend enough is Furi, the gameplay is amazing and tight, the soundtrack slaps harder than any other game and it’s overall amazing, just maybe a bit short. On a close vein, you should definitely try Hyper Light Drifter, the pixel art graphics in that game is insane and the ost is also amazing, and the gameplay is sooooo good too.

If you enjoyed the souls series, you could try Salt and Sanctuary which is basically a 2D Dark Souls, and it’s sequel Salt and Sacrifice, which goes a different way but is also very good.
