001. Introduction:
Hey there and welcome to 'Is it Feminist?'ย
2 years ago, I started creating a list of feminist games for myself. As the list grew, I noticed people in r/girlgamers requesting games with strong female leads or games that wouldnt leave them feeling disheartened because of sexism or other forms of discrimination. So I felt that this list might benefit others as well as myself.
Unfortunately, as the list grew it was a little too much work for lil'ol me to do on my own at the time which was one of the contributing factors as to why the passion for my project tapered out the first time.
However, thanks to people showing interest in my first list, even all these years later, it gave me the nudge which reinvigorated the passion to 'good enough' this list once and for all.
I hope this list will be as useful for you as it has been for me!
002. Rules:ย
Feminist and anti-discrimination values are disliked by many people, particularly cisgender hetro men, in gaming spaces. These rules are in place to keep people safe and remove griefers, trolls and derailers.
- Follow the sub-reddit's rules
- Be respectful. Harassment will not be tolerated.
- Stay on topic. No derailment so make sure your comment is relevant to gaming or the list.
- Assume good intentions; unless it's obvious a redditor is just here to cause distress.
- Allyship is a key value of this list
- Critism of this post is fine but if it brings up negative emotions within you, it's probably not the list for you.
Rules can be added or adjusted so be mindful of the changelog.
003. What makes a game feminist?:
Feminism has many schools of thought and when adding games to the list, I aim to diversify which I use but I will normally lean towards using intersectional feminism.
ย An intersectional feminist video game takes into account the diverse and overlapping identities that shape a player's experience, recognising that gender is just one of many facets. It doesnโt just plonk in a "strong female character" and call it a day. Instead, it digs deeper, addressing how race, class, disability, and sexuality interact with gender to affect people's lives in different ways.
The game's narratives and mechanics need to push back against oppressive norms. It actively resists tropes like sexualised female characters, instead offering a spectrum of women and non-binary characters with agency, flaws, and depth. The stories arenโt just about individual empowerment but engage with wider social justice issues, showing how structures of power work and how collective action can challenge them.
Importantly, the game doesnโt shy away from complexity. It acknowledges that privilege and oppression coexist in messy, sometimes contradictory ways, and allows space for that nuance in its storytelling. And itโs not just a matter of representation; the creators themselves bring diverse perspectives to the table, ensuring that the game reflects the real-world struggles and joys of those often marginalised.
I understand that people in the sub-reddit might have different personal experiences of what feminism means to them.
- Feminist games do not need to have women or girls as the main or player characters. If the game challenges aspects of the Kyriarchy then it can be categorised as feminist. Patriarchal structures harm everyone so it makes sense that everyone should do their part to challenge it in their own way. For example, in Fashion Police Squad you play as a LGBTQ+ black man sorting out fashion offences, this game challenges patriarchal norms by rejecting toxic ideas of masculinity around fashion and personality traits considered 'feminine'.

004: Key:
โ – Is feminist.
๐ – This game is neutral.
โ – NOT feminist.
โ ๏ธ – Blacklisted. CONTENT WARNING this means something serious happened that was so bad that regardless of whether the game is progressive or not, it is deemed NOT feminist because of extenuating factors and we should not line the pockets of discriminatory, abusive values or practices.
โฐ – Not yet released
๐ – A hidden gem in video games is like finding a scrappy indie film in a sea of blockbusters. Itโs that overlooked title, dripping with creativity and heart, that slips under the radar. You wonโt find it on every top ten list, but it offers something truly specialโwhether itโs a quirky story, a unique gameplay mechanic, or just pure, unfiltered fun. It's the kind of game that sticks with you, reminding you that the best experiences aren't always the loudest ones.
๐ – Being Reviewed means that the game is being looked into to see if it belongs in a different category.

- Elder Scrolls Franchise – โ Not Feminist; You can create a female character and rise to power, but the game itself doesnโt really challenge the structures of gendered power. It's still a medieval fantasy setting where the power dynamics are shaped by kings, jarls, and male-dominated hierarchies. Moreover, these games largely ignores the intersectional issues that would give it a more feminist perspective. The game doesn't grapple with how race, class, and gender intersect. Instead, it presents a world where your identity as a female character doesn't really change your experience or relationship with the world around you, as if gender exists in a vacuum, unconnected to other forms of marginalisation. At best, Elder Scrolls gives us an illusion of equality where gender doesn't seem to affect the plot or gameplay in meaningful ways but without any real interrogation of how power operates, it falls short of being feminist, let alone intersectional.

- Fallout Franchise – โ Not Feminist; The Fallout franchise, though rich in narrative, isn't feminist at its core. Its post-apocalyptic world primarily focuses on individual survival and often relies on tropes of toxic masculinity with little critique of patriarchal structures. While there are strong female characters, they tend to exist within the framework of male-dominated power structures rather than challenge them. The emphasis on individualism over collective action fails to confront systemic gender oppression in a meaningful way. Fallout 4 begins to challenge this with Nick Valentine and Piper but falls short since they are the expectations to the rule and not the rule itself.

- Why are you using reddit to make a list instead of [Enter Alternative App Here]? If the list gets unmanaged, I will transfer it to a more user friendly platform but for now it's fine here.
- Your list is terrible [Enter Bizarre Explanation Here] why even bother? Constructive citicism is always welcome but if you feel like going on a tirade, then refer back to the rules and question why a list that is trying to promote equity, diversity and inclusion upsets you.

I don’t understand why Hades is neutral but, for example, papers please is not neutral as well
To each their own, but this list doesn’t make sense to me. A game can be ‘not feminist’ due to situations outside of the game’s control (such as having a sexist dev or CEO), but to be considered ‘feminist’ it has to exclusively deal with what OP considers to be ‘feminist topics’. That’s double standards. Also, I don’t think something is or isn’t feminist purely based on whether it handles topics of womanhood very specifically.
What about female creations, or in Hades’ case, art specifically drawn by women, in a story where LGBTQ+ themes are strong and respectful. By this logic, a show like Arcane cannot be feminist because the studio that made it or the community that plays the game is full of degenerates. I also think deciding that Bayonetta is decidedly not feminist, when its main character is a strong and independent woman with her own agency, motivations and sexual expression, but papers please be neutral is…a take for sure. This links back into my earlier point too. If Bayonetta cannot be feminist because according to you she’s been designed with the ‘male gaze’ in mind, then why is Hades not feminist for having been designed by women to be sexy for a more feminine audience? What are we supposing feminism means here?
That’s a LOT of work y’all have done and I’m surprised you didn’t run out of space!
However I would consider embedding the list of games as an image. As that’s a lot of lines / hard work just to get messed up by Reddit’s poor formatting system.
Wait how is Elden Ring not at least neutral? If Bloodborne is, I assume the management isn’t an issue.
It has a bunch of female characters who are as powerful as male characters, central to story lines, and gender neutral outfits that don’t change much by body type for player characters. I was so happy with the game and the ability to wear full coverage armour. You can wear clothes collected from beings of any gender.
There are a lot of female characters, Melina, Roderika, Latenna, Ranni, Malenia, Marika, Cleanrot knights, Blackknife assassins, Millicent, Nepheli, Fia, Hyetta, Irina, the crones etc. plus even more with the extra content now. I’d say at least 50/50 representation.
All the characters have distinct motivations, and abilities, as well as styles of dress, there’s even disability representation. Multiple characters with prosthesis for example, and characters who are blind but still independent. It plays into the world building, but like Malenia’s prosthesis are really detailed, effort was clearly put into design. I don’t think they’re stereotypical since some are “villains”, and others are not. They exist on a spectrum of identities.
There isn’t a traditional romancing aspect to the game, but female characters can choose the Ranni ending which involves sort of being her partner. Characters gender doesn’t explicitly change anything in the story.
There are a lot of themes that tie into social issues. Complex political situations, wars, family, racism. It’s just in a fantasy setting, but you can see commonalities with real world issues like the Holocaust, and general themes of discrimination.
It’s a very good game, and I found the community was good too.
Edit to add:
You have the option to help stop a man who is perpetrating harm against women and men in the game. To not do so would be seen clearly as a negative. There are pretty clear moral “dilemmas” raised in the game. You’re made to feel bad if you choose bad options.
as much as i love the effort in this. its way too hard to read ๐
+1 for disappointment at Bayonetta being derided here. Iโve watched several documentaries about Bayonettaโs creation and behind the scenes footage, and itโs astronomical how much woman-driven and woman-led talent were behind her creation, from the months of hard work Mari Shimazaki put into her design to the scoping search they put into Bayonettaโs motion capture actress to capture her power. A Sega executive actually wanted Bayonettaโs glasses removed because โglasses arenโt sexyโ. To give that executive the middle finger for only being concerned with sexiness, a lot of the characters in Bayonetta have glasses or goggles or some type of eyewear.
From being a Bayonetta fan since release, the amount of women Iโve seen empowered by her far outweigh the โhoo imma jack it to the sexy witchโ crowd. The community is noticeably fuller of women and LGBTQ+ members than action games like Devil May Cry. Something being sexy doesnโt automatically make it bad, itโs refreshing to see characters like Luka get messed around with because something looking nice doesnโt mean you can just go touch it – a lesson some of the men Iโve met in gaming communities donโt seem to understand.
Edit: I see that OP has made an update to the Bayonetta listing saying that its classification wonโt be changed as โnot enough women worked on the gameโ. Will this criteria be applied to the rest of the games in this list? And please explain this criteria: is it raw numbers of women working on the game or the percentage of women working on the game? Also is there a higher ranking system for, say, women character designers versus sound designers? Iโd love some insight into this highly subjective handwaving.
Final edit: OP has been editing Bayonetta’s description all day to handwave the comments she’s receiving about this and has seemed to settle on the line “a game made by men” which is incredibly disrespectful to the wide range of hard-working women who made Bayonetta possible. If anyone would like to know more about the incredible women who worked on Bayonetta – instead of just handwaving them and pretending they don’t exist – I highly recommend [The Eyes of Bayonetta documentary](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtVQ75oqqFo). I sure do love it when people erase and undermine incredible women in the video game industry.
I don’t really understand. Is it a list in progress? Most games have no mark next to them, does it mean they were not validated as feminists games yet?
I’m having an issue with “valiant Heart” too, which is a Ubisoft Montpellier game, so shouldn’t it be banned as feminist from the list to stay coherent with the other Ubi games?
A bit of the same for “Night in the Wood”. One of the creators of the game was asked to leave the team after Zoe Quinn accused him of physical and emotional abuse. He killed himself a few days after so it’s a touchy subject, but it seems sometimes hard to draw a line of what is acceptable or not, since “Night in the Wood” is a beloved indie that doesn’t contain any of that kind of violence.
Interesting idea for a list, I donโt fully understand the criteria, some games I would consider neutral are listed feminist and vice versa for example,
but I guess we can just use this post to air out our own opinions? Iโm also guessing the ones with no emojis are undecided?
I think blacklisting games because of the team behind them is counter productive. I assume this list is to compile discussions about feminism in games, so just saying the games are blacklisted because of something that happened in the company while not actually examining the content is burying the lede? The practices of the company/dev team are very important and should be included, but I think you can still discuss the actual themes and commentary in the game beyond just โDevs are so bad itโs inherently not feminist.โ Just kinda cuts the discussion off short, you know?
According to the criteria just having a โstrong female characterโ isnโt feminist and it needs to engage with wider social issues, Iโm not really sure how Portal 1 does this, Glados and Chell are both strong female characters but I canโt recall any societal commentary. Portal 2 arguably could have some with Cave Johnson and Caroline, as well as with motherhood being a core thing in the story, but it feels like a stretch. I definitely think Half Life Alyx should be considered feminist if Portal 1 is.
Wondering what the feminist themes of Gris are, it was a sweet game about grief (I believe it was at least) but I canโt really recall anything related to feminism besides the main character being female.
Hades isnโt considered feminist? Thatโs surprisingโฆ
I think the Nier games should be considered neutral, not โnot feministโ, the female characters are very well written, while they are sexualized they are not objectified or reduced down to just being sexy. Kainรฉ in Nier Replicant is also canonically intersex, Iโm not a trans woman nor intersex, so I canโt speak on it personally, but Iโve seen trans women and intersex people resonate with her story.
That’s a very long list, thank you.
I’m surprised to not see Baldurs Gate 3 there: It is definitively feminist and inclusive, with strong female characters, LGBTQ+ representation and the studio, Larian, is very open minded and inclusive from all that one sees and hears. It also adresses dark topics like abuse in a very deep and tasteful manner.
Dragon Age: While I love the franchise, it clearly has a male gaze. There are several situations, where female characters experience SA and while you can help them, it is there mostly for shock value imo.
And Bioware sadly has a history in shoving problematic characters on especially female protagonists (Anomen in BG2 – only love inetrest for a female CHARNAME – was highly toxic and gaslighty and is considered as one of the worst characters ever in the fandom, Skadge in SWTOR bounty hunter story is a rapist and you can’t deny him joining your crew, Corso Riggs, smuggler story, SWTOR is pretty sexist, same with Doc, jedi knight story SWTOR)
Other people have already torn you apart on Bayonetta so I’ll skip that one.
You failed to mention how Celeste was made by a trans woman who literally realized she was trans in the course of writing the story, which gets reflected in the game, which also has a canonically trans main character.
Did you even play bloodborne? Literally the whole message is that when old men fuck with and try to control women and motherhood, things get worse for everyone. Just because it mentions menstruation in a more visceral light doesn’t make it bad, in fact I’ve heard a lot of women say that makes it even stronger.
The NieR games have complex and very well written female characters and a majority of their main characters are women, one of whom is canonically intersex. This is to say nothing of how the games tackle existential themes about nihilism in a very well thought out way. I’m going to guess you just saw skimpy outfits and wrote them off, just like Bayonetta.
Bayonetta is a super self-confident, (arguably open) lesbian witch (literally going to hell for the soul of her “roommate”) who is extremely okay with being her sexy self, which is the RIGHT sexy and not quite objectifying. Yes, she does her poses, but she does it in such an over the top way you just see it as art and part of her personality. I think the female fandom that feels empowered by her (maybe even far) outweighs the male fandom who are being horny about her.
The list seems to generally skew less to “is feminism actually a part of the narrative in some way” and more “was it produced by a majorly male or female team” which is NOT what feminism is about, a large central focal point is inclusivity. Men CAN be feminists.
I’m gonna be honest, your criteria is kinda fucked. Like yeah CDPR has their shit history but you know Cyberpunk is a *dystopian* game yes? I’m gonna hope you’re blacklisting only because of that and not from actually playing. I have about the same response for Bayonetta actually, I do hope you never played Bayonetta
Tfw Hogwarts Legacy is disqualified because of JK Rowling, but then Alice Madness Returns is still up there classified as feminist? If the creator behind the franchise affects in this list, how come the director and creator himself doesnโt?
As much as I love the first game,ย American McGee has shown his fetishization on the subject over and over again and the games are ultimately just an ableist wet dream of a middle aged man making it edgy for sake of being edgy. There is absolutely *nothing* feminist about that or the games.
Every time you blacklist a game for a few garbage male voices, you are erasing the hard work woman put into the game. This list is swinging the pendulum in the other direction. Sorry.
How is Halo not at least neutral? I donโt see what is so not feminist about Halo whatsoever. That seems to be a rather arbitrary choice to me. And Fallout is so weird to claim it is not feminist either. I donโt know I appreciate the effort you put in this, but some of these are just weird and arbitrary choices to me.
Stopped reading after you blacklisted Bayonetta lol I completely understand why but…
I love that woman, she’s the sole reason I started wearing heels, dresses, crop tops, jewelry and so on. Even got my first bathing suit after i finished Bayonetta 1 and it was a two piece.
I did notice an important one you missed, given your criteria:
Book of Hours and Cultist Simulator are created by Alexis Kennedy, >!who has a number of misconduct allegations, mostly with women. Which are so numerous that when details came out his former company immediately came out in support of the victims and the now-CEO even shared his own experiences and witnessing others from the guy.!<
…also, while it’s setting is interesting, Cultist Simulator has the worst elements of a game designed by a guy who doesn’t listen to feedback or critically look at his design systems. Clearly not the biggest part of this, but before the allegations came out and I couldn’t bear to play the game more, the fact the game basically required a wiki to play to survive any length of time really detracted from the experience.
There’s still a black square after potion permit, and your links are not embedding properly. The latter could just be a subreddit thing but just letting you know
I think it would be neat for two lists to be made. One purely about the game itself, excluding the community, and another list that includes outside factors.
I say this because I think that is a somewhat necessary thing to do, and I feel patterns will more easily arise with doing that. I also think it would be good to further iron out the criteria.
Neat idea in general though!
I can understand the first Hades game, Iโm surprised the second one didnโt show up on the list at all given how diverse and powerful of a female cast there is in the characters and voice actors .
Another one I was surprised not to see anywhere on the list was Baldursgate3
Thank you for putting this together and sharing.
Coral Island is a fantastic game, I think it’s worth noting that it has a character with stretch marks! I’ve never seen that in a game before and it helps she’s one of the most confident and self assured characters in the game.
My Life as a Teenage Exocolonist is another absolutely fantastic hidden gem. Very queer, anticapitalist, and have positive portrayals of same sex, polyamorous and asexual characters.
Hello! I greatly appreciate all the work you’ve done and I’ve been introduced to some games that I will definitely be checking out.
I was wondering if you could detail your explanation on why Elden Ring is not considered a feminist game? I’d love to discuss further and hopefully change your mind โฅ๏ธ (Especially with the additional lore from the DLC)
Can I just say to anyone who disagrees with something on this list – feminists aren’t a monolith. We all have slightly different opinions on what feminism is or should aim to achieve, and we’ve all had different experiences with games – and that’s ok. This list is a fantastic starting point for anyone looking for games with feminist themes or looking to avoid games with problematic elements or developers.
I just didn’t wanna see anyone tear into op about something they don’t see eye to eye on, when this is a great moment to raise each other up! Thank you OP for all the hard work putting this together ๐
Wuthering Waves is another gacha game like Genshin Impact you can include as not feminist.ย
as if my get around to list wasnt already long enough lol
This is an interesting list! Thank you for sharing it with us! This is making me want to check out Coral Island finally! Iโll check if it is on the switch
